Recently, the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) coordinated with local authorities to organize a ceremony to hand over new houses to poor households in Cat Thinh commune, Van Chan district, Yen Bai province. The total funding that BIDV sponsored to the province was 36 billion VND to join hands in responding to the emulation movement to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses nationwide by 2025 launched by the Prime Minister.

The houses handed over have an area of 50 - 70 m2, costing 60 million VND each with brick walls, fiber cement roofs, cement floors and full electrical systems, ensuring living standards and safety for residents. These projects were started at the beginning of the year and completed in April, ahead of schedule.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lien Phuong, Deputy Director of BIDV Yen Bai branch (fourth from right) handed over a new house to Mr. Giang Vang Dinh's family (gray vest).

One of the households in Cat Thinh commune that received a house this time is the family of Mr. Giang Vang Dinh, born in 1956, Pin Pe village. He currently lives with his wife, two sons and 3-year-old grandson (motherless), in an old, dilapidated house with a leaky roof, cracked walls, and no longer able to protect from the rain and sun. Mr. Dinh participated in the fight to protect the northern border in 1979 at the Cam Duong front (Lao Cai), and is a person with meritorious services to the revolution. The family's economy mainly depends on slash-and-burn farming, growing cassava and corn, so there are no conditions to renovate the house. Thanks to the attention of the local government and support from BIDV, his family now has a solid house and no longer has to live in worry every time there is rain, wind, storms and floods.

Like Mr. Dinh, Ms. Giang Thi Le, born in 1989, living in Ba Chum village, Cat Thinh commune, is also one of the families that received a new house. Ms. Le gave birth to 12 children, one of whom died early, and one son is deaf. She gave birth to her first child at the age of 13, and now her oldest child is 20 years old, has his own family, and two children, the youngest is just over 4 months old. The family's life mainly depends on gathering and working for hire.

Before receiving support to build a new house, Ms. Le's family of 14 people lived crowded in a temporary house of 40 square meters built with thin bamboo poles as pillars, a temporary roof made of old fibro-cement sheets collected from many places, a dirt floor, a bed made from old rotten wooden boards, and a simple kitchen. Ms. Le shared that when receiving support from BIDV and the government, she and her family were very grateful, hoping that the new house would help her, her husband and children stabilize their lives and feel secure in doing business.

BIDV representative, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lien Phuong, Deputy Director of BIDV Yen Bai branch shared: "Supporting house construction is not only a social activity but also a responsibility to the community. We hope that through the program, poor families will have more stable living conditions."

Previously, responding to the Prime Minister's call, at the launching ceremony to support the elimination of temporary and dilapidated houses nationwide with the theme "Warm houses for my people", BIDV contributed 100 billion VND to join hands with the banking industry to support 1,000 billion VND to implement this meaningful social security program. Warm houses "closed above, durable below" are an important foundation for people to settle down, improve their quality of life and move towards sustainable development.

Supporting the construction of houses for the poor is one of the areas that BIDV has prioritized and devoted a lot of resources to implement over the past years. To date, BIDV has supported hundreds of billions of VND to build tens of thousands of houses for the poor across the country.
