In August 1957, at the International Conference of Teachers held in Warsaw (Poland) , the Charter of Teachers was approved and decided to take November 20 every year as "International Charter of Teachers Day".
On November 20, 1958, the celebration of "International Teachers' Charter Day" was held for the first time in our country. The event was not only held in Hanoi, but also took place from Vinh Linh to the border and island areas. The celebration of "International Teachers' Charter Day" has become a traditional festival of the Vietnamese education sector.

After Vietnam's reunification, with the positive meaning of the "International Charter Day of Teachers November 20" which was organized before, according to the wishes of the whole country's educators, the recommendations of the 8th Congress of the Vietnam Education Trade Union (April 1982), the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Universities and Vocational Secondary Schools, the General Department of Vocational Training, the Committee for the Protection of Mothers and Children..., the Council of Ministers (now the Government) issued Decision No. 167/HDBT, dated September 26, 1982, deciding to take November 20 every year as Vietnam Teachers' Day.

"Van the su bieu" is the title honoring Chu Van An , an educator and high-ranking mandarin of the Tran Dynasty, considered the model teacher of Vietnam forever because of his noble qualities and great contributions to education. After his death, the royal court worshiped him at the Temple of Literature, considering him equal to the ancient sages.

On October 15, 1968 , on the occasion of the new school year, Uncle Ho wrote "Letter to cadres, teachers, workers, employees, pupils and students starting the new school year". This was the last letter Uncle sent to the education sector. In the letter, there is an excerpt as follows:
Education is the cause of the masses. It is necessary to fully promote socialist democracy, build good relationships, and closely unite teachers, teachers and students, students with each other, officials at all levels, and schools and people to successfully complete that task.

During his 5 years of teaching History at Thang Long Private School (1935-1940), Mr. Vo Nguyen Giap taught both Vietnamese history and world history. People's Teacher is the highest title awarded to individuals (usually those working in the education sector). The decision to award this title is considered by the National Council for Emulation and Commendation, and signed by the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
